But despite the cold weather, there are actually plenty of ways to take advantage of yards and patios throughout the winter months. Bundle up and step outside to enjoy these creative activities in your own backyard this season.
Iced Out
If you’ve got a patch of grass in the summertime, you can have yourself a sheet of ice in the winter. Do-it-yourself outdoor ice rinks have become increasingly popular and provide a unique outlet for wintertime outdoor recreation. While a bit of an undertaking, a rink can be enjoyed by all ages whether for ice skating, a game of pick-up hockey or broomball.
To get started, you’ll want to make sure your space is flat enough for a rink. Once you’ve measured for size, the components can be found at most local hardware stores or online. These include boards to surround the ice, triangular brackets to support the boards, and a liner to fill with water. If you’re not up to the task, there are a variety of local companieswho provide the parts and installation. You will, however, need to maintain your rink throughout the winter by keeping the snow shoveled and ice smooth.
Snow Much Fun
Ice a little too slippery? Snow shoeing and cross-country skiing are an alternative way to get moving this winter with more traction underfoot. Stepping and gliding through fresh powder provides a challenging workout and the opportunity to take in a picturesque snowfall. Your yard is a great place to get started, but there are many area forest preserves with trails perfect for either activity. Before investing in the equipment, check out your local sporting goods store for rental options.

After your outdoor activities, a winter campfire can be among the coziest. If you already have a fire pit for warm weather months, clear away the snow and light it up.
