The Near West Side is made up of several noteworthy neighborhoods including Fulton River District, the West Loop, Little Italy, Greektown, University Village, and Tri-Taylor. Once a major port of entry and the site of rail yards and factories, the Near West Side has emerged as a thriving community with a robust restaurant and entertainment district.

The area is home to the United Center, where residents can catch a concert or a Bulls or Blackhawks game. Several colleges and universities are also located in the Near West Side such as Malcom X College, Rush University, and University of Illinois at Chicago.
